7 Behaviors to Look for in a New Puppy

New year, new puppy?! Maybe this is your first time ever owning a dog or you're looking for your fifth or sixth member of the pack (can never have enough tbh). Regardless of your situation, we want to give you a couple of things to keep in mind before bringing that new dog home.

  • Confidence. A puppy showing confidence will most likely march right up to you, both head and tail high. They won't shy away from new interactions.

  • Independence. Does the puppy follow you around or move on when you walk away?

  • Dominance. When the puppy is held upside down on its back, does it struggle fiercely to get back up/show aggression, or does it become submissive?

  • Trainability. Does the puppy pay attention to you when you have a toy or treat?

  • Sensitivity to handling. Do they show discomfort when you touch their paws or face?

  • Reaction to loud noises. Do they cower or do they investigate? No reaction at all may mean hearing problems.

  • Problem-solving abilities. When given something new, do they watch or are they fearful?

Hopefully these helped you determine the behavioral characteristics you're looking for in a new dog! It's very important to research different breeds and what behaviors they show naturally so that they fit in perfectly to your way of living!
